50 children with teachers, volunteers and support staff participated in what proved to be a truly inspirational day. 10 schools presented their ideas before a Dragon's Den style panel of influential environmental judges including; Dr. Liz Goodwin of WRAP, Ian Fielder - Chairman of BIFM and Professor Bill McGuire - Lecturer of earth sciences at UCL and Science Adviser to Footprint Friends.
Canon Burrows C.E. Primary School were the overall winners with their 'Why throw away perfectly good pencils ' Wipe Out Waste idea. Full details of all the presentations are available on the Footprint Friends website. The winning school will now be powerPerfected which will provide the entire school with savings in costs, kWh and carbon emissions enabling them to fund more WOW initiatives going forward. The children also received a super trophy, eco books and T-shirts.
When talking about the event the judge Bill McGuire had this to say:
"The most fantastic presentations I have seen on the topic - ever. They would certainly give my students a run for their money. Often individuals think that they are unable to make a difference, but just imagine if all the schools in Britain took up the suggestions today and all the homes did the same thing there would be millions and millions of tones of carbon saved in this country - if that was translated around the world it would have a huge impact. Everything that everyone does has a significant impact and can make a big difference without changing our lifestyles very much at all - WOW has been absolutely Brilliant!"
