Technical information & security of supply

The powerPerfector is designed to address a number of common power supply problems in a single unit. Uniquely, all these improvements are achieved through the internal interaction of magnetic fields, with no active suppression or compensation, meaning that no moving parts or electronics are required. The design is extremely efficient with its performance and reliability - unmatched by any technology available in the UK today. The additional benefits to power quality are set to become increasingly important as more and more of our clients raise the need for security in their electricity supply.

 Voltage Optimisation

The powerPerfector has the following primary functions:

  1. Incoming voltage (Vin) – typically around 242V for sites in the UK – is brought to the optimum operating level for most equipment at around 220V (Vout). Equipment downstream will then consume less energy than with the over-voltage conditions normally prevalent in the UK. In motors, for example, over-voltage drives the core into saturation, which wastes energy as heat. The powerPerfector corrects this with 99.9% efficiency across its entire operating range, so the resulting savings are not offset by energy losses in the unit itself.
  2. Voltages on the three supply phases are balanced by the regulating effect of the powerPerfector unreferenced star point (ii). Phase balancing of over 20% has been observed, which dramatically increases the efficiency of 3-phase AC motor equipment, common in air distribution systems.
  3. A harmonic filter (i) is integrated into the design of the powerPerfector, giving an attenuation in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and a marked reduction in 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics. As harmonics are potentially damaging to electronic equipment and known to reduce the efficiency of HV transformers, this is an important function that delivers tangible energy-saving benefits.
  4. As a result of the improvements in power quality, a typical powerPerfector installation will bring the Power Factor of a site up by 4% to 10%. This may alleviate the need for additional Power Factor Correction (PFC), although the powerPerfector is fully compatible with this type of equipment. Considerable reductions in reactive power have been achieved, often reducing penalty charges from electricity suppliers.
  5. The powerPerfector will protect a site from common transients, these voltage spikes having a devastating effect on sensitive electronic equipment. As transients become more common, due to increased switching on the grid, this provides a vital defence for critical IT systems.

The powerPerfector Plus inherits all of these features, but also has the ability to select its own optimisation settings in response to fluctuations in the level of supply voltage. It is also able to correct under-voltage to ensure your site receives an optimised supply at all times. Optimisation settings are selected by means of a patented thyristor-based control module, which ensures rapid, noise-free switching and complete reliability. An authorised user can adjust the supply voltage online and on-load through the unit's user interface, which can easily interface with a BMS or other control system.
