For those of you who didn't catch last week's release of the above report, may I refer you to a fantastic DEFRA case study involving powerPerfector. The full report is available on the link below...
Anita Collier, Head of Built Environment Sustainability
Team, Estates Division, DEFRA Estates.
"To date, six installations have been completed and savings are on target to be above those initially predicted i.e. between 8% and 11%. Current estimates are that we will achieve savings of at least £500K per year in electricity costs and 475 tonnes of carbon per year, with some sites having the potential of up to 15% savings. This project is delivering tangible results which will help Defra meet it SOGE targets. Our data and case studies will be made available to all other government departments through our website, in order to share good practice and any lessons learned. It has been such a successful pilot that BEST have gone back to the Management Board and sought (and received) approval for a further £1.8M to roll out the technology across the Estate". |

Earlier this year Specific Heat, a multi-million pound building
services solutions provider, became the first approved
contractor to install their own powerPerfector unit.
Jason Hall, Energy Manager for Specific Heat, comments:
'There was a healthy debate and some scepticism from our electrical staff regarding the technology but after looking into the principles involved we were happy to proceed with the installation of a powerPerfector. We already had our own electricity sub-meters installed and these enable us to compare any changes with historical data. The initial results are very good and we are now realising savings of around 15% in our electrical consumption. Our sub-metering also allowed us to examine, to a certain extent, where the savings are taking place. It was apparent that our equipment with a magnetic cores, such as sodium lighting ballasts and motors were working more economically and producing the greatest savings. The only noticeable change to occur operationally was to the high bay metal halide lights in our Sheetmetal Fabrication Unit. The colour rendering changed from slightly yellow to a more pleasing white. These lights are now operating correctly as designed and we have received no complaints from our fabrication staff. We are now looking at installing another powerPerfector in our Shopfitting Manufacturing Unit.' Specific Heat will be looking to complete installations for other companies in Scotland and have already completed a number of site surveys in the area. |

The Public Sector team at powerPerfector, supported by our
Engineering team, have been working at a fevered rate assisting
the grant application process of over 50 FE Colleges, all
applying for LSC funding to finance the purchase and
installation of energy saving technology to reduce green house
gases.
With the pressure of the February closing date the teams got the process down to a fine art and consequently the success rate for the applications looks to be fantastic. |

The Alyesbury Housing Estate is one of the largest housing
Estates in Europe and possible the most notorious in the UK. It
was also the site of Tony Blair's first speech as prime minister
in 1997. Southwark Council are in the process of planning a
groundbreaking 15 year regeneration programme for the entire
estate which with see the demolition of the ugly 1960's high
rise blocks to create a dynamic new neighbourhood for South East
London.
Two 210kVA powerPerfector units both with 7% optimisation settings were installed on 30th August 2007 in the estate's main boiler room which provides the water supply to the 7,500 residents . Optimising the voltage by 7% ordinarily yields an 11.5% reduction in kWh consumption. In this case average consumption after the powerPerfector was installed is at least 16.3% below the expected level for the outside temperature. A surprising and very pleasing result for all concerned.
Comments by Ian Lane, Principle Energy Manager Officer,
Southwark Council :
'"Having completed an internal tender procedure powerPerfector proved to be the only technology that could provide us with energy saving benefits and security of supply we were looking for. We are pleased to confirm that this report is a true illustration of the savings we are achieving at Aylesbury Estate Boiler House and, having received the proven successful results on such a critical site, I hope that work with powerPerfector will continue as I believe the technology can assist in achieving the targets of carbon reduction the council are committed to meeting." |

Property managers around the UK faced with the new legislation
coming into force this April i.e. 'Energy Performance in
Building's Directive' will (if they haven't already) have to
commit to the expenditure required to improve energy efficiency
and reduce CO2 emissions in their buildings if they wish to
improve their rating.
As energy costs continue to rise, effective energy management becomes crucial to sustainability and improving bottom line, therefore, prudent forward planning can mean that investment in the right technology will not only improve the above but the ROI produced as a result of substantial cost savings, will provide long term rewards for the business whilst also benefiting the environment. A REAL WIN - WIN powerPerfector will prepare a free cost/value assessment of any site that could benefit from Voltage Optimisation technology please call and ask to speak to one of our energy consultants who will talk you through the simple FOUR STEP process. |

For those who have accused us (probably fairly) of concentrating
our efforts south of the border and of not doing enough to
increase our profile up North. Please take note, we are
addressing this imbalance by taking part in six one day events
around the country, four of which are most definitely north of
Watford.
As a trade organisation ESTA will be informing Facilities,
Energy and Property Managers about the new legislation coming
into force this year covering the legal responsibilities
surrounding 'Energy Performance Certificates' and we will be
there offering the solution to achieving/improving that rating.
We will be booking one to one meeting during the morning and
lunch time sessions, so please email me or your pP account
manager if you would like to reserve an appointment with our
representatives at these events.
Attendance is FREE so no excuses, we look forward to seeing
you there.

A 560kVA powerPerfector unit with an optimisation setting of 6%
was installed at Cooper Bussman on 20th October 2007. The
expected level of savings for a 6% optimisation is 10% but the
report indicates that the average kWh consumption after
installation is found to be 10.9% below the expected level for
the external temperature.
To normalise this data for the effects of external temperature we use "Degree Days", which give a measure of how hard heating or cooling equipment must work to compensate for external temperature. A Degree Day value is calculated for each week from Met Office temperature data. By plotting weekly kWh consumption against Degree Days and fitting a trend line to this data it is possible to extrapolate the expected level of electricity consumption for a given number of Degree Days. The deviation of weekly kWh consumption values recorded after installation from this trend line shows how actual consumption compares to the expected level each week, and hence quantifies the savings due to the installation of the powerPerfector unit. A very pleasing result. |

Would you like to see your powerPerfector CO2 savings up on your
web site? Well now you can.
After developing our own software to measure powerPerfector's realtime cost/CO2/kWh savings, we are now offering this facility to our clients. Whether the display is in your building's reception area, conference room or on your website, the choice is yours. The Greengauge will soon be making appearances at Land Registry and Defra, maybe alongside the new 'Energy Performance Certificates'!!
GUESS THE DATE.
Whoever guesses most accurately the time and date that our CO2 savings counter hits 100,000,000 kgs......we will pay to the charity of your choice £1000.00 All guesses on an email to me, by the end of April.. You can now view our web site in the new 'Energy Saving Mode' to select this version click on the energy saving option immediately under the counter panel on the left hand side. |

The largest exhibition of its type and probably the most
exciting one of the year for us. Plans are under way for a new
stand so you won't be able to miss us on T82, just inside the
main entrance.
This is our fourth year attending this event and has become an important date in our marketing calendar not only providing us with the opportunity to meet face to face with our clients but it is a fantastic forum for showing where our technology fits into the Energy Saving Market, right in the Frontline. It will also provides us with the perfect platform to introduce something a little different!!!. CEO Angus Robertson will be presenting in the Nemex Seminar Hall at 11.15 am on Wednesday 21st he will also be speaking at the ESTA Workshop, day and time to be announced.
APRIL'S WORKSHOP...
The continued success of the workshops has meant that I am not sending out a blanket email invitation for this one, as the previous responses have been somewhat overwhelming. The invitations have now gone out for the next event on Wednesday the 30th April to the individuals who have requested them, if you have not received an invite but would like to attend, please email me, if at all possible I will fit you in. |
